A maze design that looks good grabs attention. How much impact a good-looking maze design will have does vary. Sometimes it can get a lot of attention! One of my favorite examples of this is the Derthick’s corn maze in Ohio. Phil Derthick had us create a design for his 50th wedding anniversary. When he finally showed it to his wife, she was a bit surprised and wondered how it would be received by the public. They received it very well! It was covered by their local news and by several national TV news programs. I first saw the coverage on Yahoo’s news. ABC News and Good Morning America also covered the story. It was pretty neat to see how much attention the design received!
A good maze design does a lot more than just grab attention. A good-looking maze design sets a person's expectation for the maze experience. It looks more uniform, clean and neat. It conveys the idea that the maze experience looks professional and is worth more money. This is one of the most profitable reasons for having a good-looking maze design. Please take some time to browse our mazes here. We've created hundreds!
“If good design is doing its job, it is managing your perception of an experience in many ways—both obvious and not so obvious. How you feel, and therefore if whether you’re going to engage and buy, is directly influenced by the design" - Mike Myatt (Forbes Magazine, "How Design Matters--More Than Ever--In 2014")
What really matters is what happens when a person gets into the maze. MazePlay designs mazes that are more fun. How much fun a customer has in the maze directly influences the perceived value. Customers that have a good time in the maze are far more likely to talk to their friends about it. Another interesting note is that when people are happier and having fun, they tend to be willing to spend more money. Therefore, how a maze design functions makes a difference on how much people enjoy the maze and consequently how much they spend while they are there.
"There are plenty of studies which show that good...design not only makes people happier, it also causes them to spend more money." - Addison Duvall (Hongkiat.com, "When Does Brand Design Actually Matter?")
We design MazePlay mazes to entertain and to give families and friends a chance to reconnect. Our mazes are generally designed in different sections were space allows. We design a section for small kids where we can place our Farm Tracks© game. This is typically just a small 10-15 minute loop which lets them experience the maze but not get lost. There’s a general section that takes most people less than an hour to complete where the Farm Scene Investigation© game can be placed. Then we like to design a more difficult loop for those who are looking for a challenge. This loop can have the Farm Scene Treasure Hunt© game in it where friends can compete with each other to find the most treasure. People get the chance to do one loop and come out and rest or browse the concessions stands then go back in for more. We design more than a walk through the corn we design fun!
If you want to be really successful, you will want to awaken possibility and imagination in those who come out to your maze. In the words of Benjamin Zander, “You will know you're doing it if you see their eyes shining.”
